For book printing in Kenya and Uganda, the right choice depends mostly on quantity and deadline. Short runs, urgent reprints and personalised jobs are usually best printed locally in Nairobi or Kampala. Large offset runs — school textbooks, readers and general titles in thousands of copies — often cost less per copy when printed in bulk in India and shipped to Mombasa.

This guide is written for publishers, schools, NGOs and distributors in East Africa. It explains how to compare a local quote with an Indian one, what an FOB price includes, how books reach Nairobi and Kampala, and how to place a first order with Printheal Technologies in New Delhi. Publishers in Tanzania already print their books with us.

Book printing in East Africa: local or India?

Both options have a place. Many publishers use local printers for small, fast jobs and an Indian press for their main school-book runs. The table below sums up where each one usually makes sense.

Book printing Nairobi / Kampala (local)Book printing India (bulk offset)
Best quantityShort runs, reprints, proofsMedium to very large runs
Price per copyHigher on long runsFalls sharply as quantity rises
Lead timeFastest — no sea freightPrinting time plus sea transit
CapacityVaries by printerTwo units running 24 hours, three shifts
Best forUrgent jobs, small batches, local eventsTextbooks, readers, general titles, annual school-book orders

The decision usually comes down to one question: is the saving on a large run bigger than the extra time and freight cost? For a few hundred copies needed next week, local book printing in Nairobi or Kampala wins. For tens of thousands of textbooks needed before the school year, printing in India often does.

Why does bulk book printing in India cost less per copy?

Offset printing has a fixed set-up cost — making plates, preparing the press and running make-ready sheets until colour is right. That cost is shared across the whole run, so the more copies you print, the lower the cost of each book. Indian presses that specialise in long runs spread that set-up cost over very large quantities.

  • High-speed presses. Our heat-set web offset presses run up to 60,000 impressions an hour, and sheet-fed presses take sheets up to 28 × 40 inches.
  • Everything in-house. CTP prepress, printing, perfect binding, section sewing, stitching and export packing happen under one roof.
  • Round-the-clock capacity. Two production units in Delhi NCR work 24 hours a day in three shifts — useful when a whole term's books must be ready together.
  • Textbook binding. Section-sewn binding for books that must survive a full school year of daily use.

How do books get from India to Nairobi and Kampala?

Most bulk orders travel by sea in containers. Kenya's main seaport is Mombasa; from there books move inland by road or rail to Nairobi. Uganda has no coastline, so shipments for Kampala are usually landed at Mombasa (or sometimes Dar es Salaam) and then trucked inland. Smaller or urgent consignments can go by air to Nairobi or Entebbe — our Delhi units are close to Delhi's air cargo hub.

Your clearing and forwarding agent handles import formalities and duties on arrival. Ask them early what documents they need, so the paperwork from India matches.

What an FOB price includes

We quote FOB (Free On Board) Indian port. The price covers printing, binding, shrink-wrapping, export cartons, palletising and loading onto the vessel in India. Sea or air freight to East Africa, marine insurance, import duties and inland transport are separate — we can arrange freight on request.

When you compare an Indian FOB quote with a local quote in Nairobi or Kampala, add freight, insurance, clearing and inland delivery to the FOB figure first. Only then are the two numbers like for like.

See an FOB price now: the instant book printing calculator shows a live FOB estimate in US dollars, euros or rupees. Change quantity, pages, paper or binding and watch the price per copy update.

When does printing in India pay off?

Print in India if…

  • you need thousands of copies of the same title
  • you can plan a few months ahead of the school year
  • you want section-sewn textbooks or hardbound titles in volume
  • you are printing several titles together and can fill a container

Print locally if…

  • you need a few hundred copies or fewer
  • the deadline is days, not weeks
  • you need receipt books, forms or other short local jobs
  • every copy carries different content

Many East African publishers combine the two: the main print run comes from India well before term starts, and a local printer handles quick top-up reprints if a title sells out.

Plan your book printing around the school calendar

School books must be in your warehouse before term begins. Work backwards from that date: allow time for proof approval, printing and binding, sea transit, port clearing and inland delivery to Nairobi or Kampala. Booking press time early avoids the peak school-book season, when presses everywhere are busiest.

What to send for an accurate quote

A quote is only as accurate as the specifications behind it. Before you compare a local printer with an Indian press, put the same details in front of both:

SpecificationExample
Trim sizeA5, B5 or A4 (standard sizes waste less paper)
Page countInside pages, ideally a multiple of 16 or 32
Inside paperUncoated woodfree (58–90 GSM) or coated art (90–170 GSM)
ColoursBlack-only or full colour inside; full-colour cover
BindingSaddle stitch, perfect, section sewn or hardbound
QuantityPer title, plus any split between Kenya and Uganda

If you are printing several titles, list each one separately. Grouping titles into one order often fills a container and lowers the freight cost per book.
