If you are comparing a printing press Accra publishers use locally with printing in India, the answer depends on run size. Local presses win on short, urgent jobs; for large textbook runs, printing in India often gives a lower price per copy even after freight to Tema. Printheal already prints for publishers in Ghana, including Adwisa Publications, All Good Books, A-Plus Publications, Kenmas Publications and Quam Publications.
Printing press Accra or India: which gives the best price?
Both have a role. The best choice is the one that delivers the right books, on time, at the lowest landed cost per copy.
| Local press in Ghana | Printing in India | |
|---|---|---|
| Best run size | Short runs, reprints, urgent work | Medium to very large runs |
| Lead time | Fastest — no freight | Production plus sea transit to Tema |
| Price per copy | Competitive on short runs | Often lower on long runs |
| Peak-season capacity | Depends on the press | Two units running 24 hours |
| Currency | Cedi | USD, EUR or INR |
When a printing press in Ghana is the right choice
For a few hundred copies, an urgent reprint, or work you want to check in person, a local printing press Ghana publishers already know is often the sensible option. There is no sea freight, no port clearing, and you can visit the press. The same applies outside the capital: if your business is in Ashanti, searching for a "printing press Kumasi" will find local suppliers for quick jobs.
We do not see local presses as the competition for every job. Many publishers use both: a local press for short runs and reprints, and India for the big school-book runs.
Why Ghanaian publishers print large runs in India
- Capacity for large runs. School-book seasons need tens of thousands of copies on tight deadlines. Our two units in Delhi NCR run 24 hours a day in three shifts.
- Lower price per copy on volume. High-speed heat-set web presses (up to 60,000 impressions an hour) and sheet-fed offset presses keep the unit cost low.
- Everything under one roof. Prepress, printing, binding and export packing happen in-house, so quality is controlled from file to finished carton.
- Textbook expertise. Section-sewn and perfect-bound textbooks built to survive a full school year.
- Certified quality. ISO 9001:2015 certified processes and a digital proof before every run.
How to compare book printing companies in Ghana with India
When you compare book printing companies in Ghana with a printer in India, compare like with like. Ask every supplier to quote the same specification — size, page count, paper, colours, binding and quantity — and then compare the cost of books delivered to your warehouse, not just the printing price.
- FOB price from India: printing, binding, export cartons, palletising and loading on the vessel.
- Ocean freight to Tema and marine insurance.
- Ghanaian import duties, port charges and your clearing agent's fee.
- Transport from Tema to your warehouse.
Divide the total by the number of copies. That landed cost per copy is the fair number to put next to a local quote.

How much does book printing cost from India?
How much does book printing cost depends on six things: quantity, page count, trim size, paper, colours and binding. Quantity matters most, because offset set-up costs are shared across the run. Our book printing cost guide explains each factor in detail.
Mistakes to avoid when comparing quotes
- Different specifications. A quote on lighter paper or a cheaper binding will always look lower. Fix the size, paper, colours and binding before you compare.
- Printing price instead of landed price. A local quote usually includes delivery; an export quote usually does not. Add freight, insurance and clearing.
- One quantity only. Ask for two or three quantities. The difference in price per copy shows whether one larger run beats several reprints.
- Leaving it too late. Sea transit and port clearing take time. A cheaper price does not help if books miss the start of term.
- Skipping the proof. Always approve a proof before printing to avoid expensive reprints.
What Ghanaian publishers usually print with us
Most of our work for Ghana is education publishing: school textbooks, workbooks, exam preparation books and supplementary readers, plus some general titles. Textbooks are usually printed on uncoated woodfree paper with a laminated four-colour cover, and section-sewn or perfect bound depending on how long the book must last. Our guide to book binding types explains the difference.
Orders are packed for export: shrink-wrapped in bundles, packed in export cartons and palletised, so books arrive in Tema in good condition.
How pricing works: FOB Indian port
We quote FOB (Free On Board) Indian port. The price covers printing, binding, shrink-wrapping, export cartons, palletising and loading onto the vessel in India. Ocean freight to Tema, marine insurance and Ghanaian import duties are separate, and we can arrange freight on request.
Shipping books from India to Ghana
Most orders travel by sea to Tema, Ghana's main container port. Smaller or urgent orders can go by air to Accra.
| Method | Typical transit |
|---|---|
| Sea freight to Tema (LCL or full container) | [ 25–35 days ] |
| Air freight to Accra | [ 3–7 days ] |
[ Transit times are indicative — Printheal to confirm. ]
We prepare the export documents — commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading — and can supply a certificate of origin on request.
Plan around the school calendar
Textbooks need to arrive before the school year starts. Work backwards from the date you need books in your warehouse: allow time for proof approval, printing and binding, then sea transit and clearing at Tema. Booking press time early avoids the peak-season rush.
Many publishers split the work. They print the main school-book run in India well ahead of the season, at the lower price per copy, and keep a local press in Accra or Kumasi for top-up reprints if a title sells faster than expected. This gives the savings of volume printing without the risk of running out of stock mid-term.
If you are planning for the next academic year, it helps to send us your title list and estimated quantities early. We can then reserve press time, confirm paper availability and agree a production schedule that fits your shipping window to Tema.
